A Few of My Favorite Things

One of my favorite charitable organizations is The Shelter for Abused Women and Children. This organization was begun in 1989 with a 20-bed facility available for those who were victims of abuse. Through the open hearts of so many the Shelter now has a 60-bed shelter with counseling, kennel facilities and high security. Serving Collier County, the largest county in Florida, it is the only state certified shelter in the county. The population served by the shelter includes women and their children up to the age of 18, single women and men who are survivors of domestic violence of all races, socio-economic status and religions. The Shelter's vision is "a community without domestic violence so that every home is a safe haven for the family it shelters." Their mission is "to help adult and child victims and survivors of domestic violence through safety, intervention, and support; to educate the public about domestic voilence; and to advocate for social change against domestic violence."

Naples is a very creative place to find yourself living or visiting. There is a wealth of local talent in this area and the various venues that support that talent is adding yet another face. This November marks the kick-off of what will be the annual Naples International Film Festival and the town is buzzing with anticipation for this event.

NIFF was created by a group of visionaries wishing to invoke excitement and involvement in the arts for those who reside in, and visit the Naples area.

This event will open with a black-tie gala evening at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts on Thursday, November 5^th, where the film "The Cove" will be screened. This three day event will take place in several locations, including the brand new, luxury theatre, The Silverspot, located at The Mercato.

Movie making and movie viewing are very much a part of the American experience and Naples will no doubt play a major role in the introduction of new films as this event continues to grow year by year.

Since it began in 2001, The Naples Winter Wine Festival has raised over $74 million for children in need. This annual event is ranked among the top ten "must do" events to attend for wealthy Americans, no doubt due to the exclusivity, prestige and quality of the weekend long event. Top chefs from around the world participate along with some of the finest vintners around. Naples readies itself for this extraordinary weekend as the private planes begin to descend upon the Naples Municipal Airport and the fun begins. Some of the auctioned items have included a 10-day Caribbean voyage aboard a private yacht, a private tour of the Vatican, two tickets to the Emmys, a drawn character in The Simpsons, not to mention the wine. This is a wonderful event, with good people having a good time and giving to a good cause.
